Massachusetts Eviction Moratorium Set to Expire

Gov. Charlie Baker is set to allow the temporary eviction moratorium expire on October 17th.

“Baker said Tuesday extending the eviction moratorium would deepen debt for tenants and landlords. His remarks came the day after the commonwealth announced $112 million in new funding to add judges to take eviction cases, offer rental assistance for eligible tenants and mediation between tenants and landlords in hopes of staving off eviction proceedings. “

This means landlords may begin sending notices to tenants who are past due on rent and begin filing eviction proceedings in court if tenants do not come up with any of their past due rents. More on the announcment can be found here.

The Baker administration also announced their Eviction Diversion Iniative which includes over $100 million for landlords and tenants impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The plan provides money to housing programs RAFT and HomeBase as well as providing money to landlords and tenants for legal representation among other things.
